Google’s Web Stories are a popular way of consuming content while also giving businesses an opportunity to drive traffic to their website or app.

To help businesses more easily create Web Stories, Google is developing a WordPress plugin that should be out of beta testing later this year, according to Search Engine Land.

What are Web Stories?

Google Web Stories are short snippets of content (“snackable content”) that stimulate users’ interest. A Web Story typically contains between 4 and 30 pages, with each page having no more than 10 words. Videos in Web Stories should be no longer than 15 seconds, shot in portrait mode so that they display in full screen on a mobile device, and have captions so that even in loud public places a viewer can consume the full content.

According to Google, a “Web Story is a visual storytelling format in Google Search results that immerses the user in a tap-through full-screen experience. Web Stories can also appear in Google Images, Discover, and the Google app.” Web Stories are displayed either in a single result view, a grid view with multiple stories, or a carousel view.

Web Stories should be complete, tell the full story, and not overly commercial. They should not require users to click links to other websites or apps to get essential information, and not have more than one outbound link or attachment per page. Furthermore, the outbound links and attachments must include the appropriate disclosures.

Consumers of Web Stories

Web Stories are a new form of Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), according to Search Engine Land. Web Stories are mobile-friendly, free for use, and ideally for busy, on-the-go mobile users. Web Stories are easy to access and are inviting to those who are scrolling search results on their phone.
